Well, we take frequent short getaways. We just returned from camping at Oscar Scherer State Park. We love interacting with nature and spending time at the nature center learning about plants and animals.
We had a big road trip last month for 10 days. We went to Atlanta for a conference. We stopped at State Parks along the way to learn about history and wildlife. We did a cave tour on our return trip as well. We love to travel and learn together and appreciate the opportunity to win a vacation for our family.

    1. Jen Reyneri Avatar

We too love nature, just don’t get out camping as much as we’d like! Excited to be connecting with other like-minded Florida homeschooling friends!

When was the last time your homeschool family took a vacation? Where was it? How did you incorporate learning? We love family vacations and have always made sure we experienced culture, whether we were in the Bahamas, or Mexico, we tried to experience local life, art, and food. We are new to the home school family (1 month in) and are very excited about capitalizing on new opportunities to share these experiences with our son.

Sounds like fun. We just got back from the vacation of a life time through the Make A Wish Foundation to Carlsbad, CA to Legoland. An awesome trip and lots of memories!! We find all sorts of learning, while we travel we made up road maps of places along the way and fun information. We stop at the Welcome Centers where they collected all sorts of educational information.

  2. Trisha Avatar

Ummm… wow! I think this may be the best giveaway I’ve ever seen. You’ll have about a bazillion entries to this one, but I’m entering and crossing my fingers 🙂

    1. Jen Reyneri Avatar

You never know, Trisha! Thanks for being part of the fun!

Our last vacation as a family was to a rental house we love in Santa Cruz, CA. Steps from the beach, we boogie board, we watch the boats, we scour the tidepools at Spanish Bay. It was a beautiful day along the Carmel coastline and while my kids were splashing in the waves, a sea lion came swimming by and played with them. It was the best nature experience we’ve ever had!

    1. Jen Reyneri Avatar

AH, yes- LOVE Santa Cruz! And Capitola too 🙂 A sea lion is seriously too cool! Do you have pictures? 🙂

We went to the mountains for a week in early April and played in the creek, read books in the porch swing, did our ‘schoolwork’ in the early mornings (it was a school week, after all!) to get it out of the way, visited every playground, had picnics and generally relaxed. We also took our paints and painted lots and lots of pictures and hung them on the cabin walls. It was an amazing week!

    1. Jen Reyneri Avatar

I LOVE painting and reading on vacation! Sounds fabulous! Thanks for entering!

Hubby has traveled a lot in the past for work. We typically pick and choose a different state to visit when we can. In the past we have searched for local historical or educational locations to visit. Our dream vacation? Washington DC/Williamsburg/Philadelphia.

    1. Jen Reyneri Avatar

I know how it feels to have a traveling husband- but it does present many blessings too! DC- for sure! Hoping to head there ourselves this June! Thanks for connecting!

We haven’t taken a family vacation in years, but we did do some camping. We learned about fossils and rock strata in central Oregon, and had a great time. We would love to win this vacation!

    1. Jen Reyneri Avatar

Yu sure could use a vacation then, Kim! I love Oregon though! Such a beautiful place to live!

  7. Christina Avatar

Our last vacation was to the Museum of the Rockies in Bozeman, MT. We spent the entire day in the museum drawing the specimens and learning about dinosaurs. In the evening we got to hear Dr. Jack Horner speak about his discoveries.

    1. Jen Reyneri Avatar

I’ve not been to Montana but here it’s gorgeous! I’d love to hear more about your post-carding!

  8. Lori Avatar

Our last big vacation was to Oregon, Washington, Idaho etc. Loved learning about the history of that area…and the different geographical regions.

    1. Jen Reyneri Avatar

Agreed. Beautiful country. I love the intro video on your blog, Lori!

  9. Amy Avatar

We just got back from a “Mennonite” vacation of visiting family. While at my home in PA, we visited an Amish farm, toured two chocolate factories, and learned how the first soft pretzels in the US were made. We also heard lots of great family stories from my grandmothers. Other than this, it’s been a very, very long time.

    1. Jen Reyneri Avatar

Mmm. Soft pretzels. That’s a great homeschool history lesson!

  10. Amanda Townsend Avatar

    Hi!

Well, our family of 6 is more creative in our family vacations (read budgeted 🙂 Either my parents or our in-law’s will let us know when they are going on vacation and, since they both live near beaches, we stay in their homes during our vacation times 🙂 It is a tremendous blessing and we just bring our school work and plan fun trips to the aquarium and other off-the-beaten path sites around their homes. We’d love to take a ‘real’ vacation before we’re officially foster parents (should be fully certified this August). We can travel with children in our care so if we were to be able to add to our number and bless another child with a vacation that would be great, too! Did I mention I’m fluent in Spanish and am teaching my children to speak this wonderful language??? What a JOY it would be to have that hand’s-on practice for them!! 🙂

    1. Jen Reyneri Avatar

Que bueno, Amanda! Hablo español también!
Yes, a blessing to know family at the beaches! I guess that’s why we finally got a cottage here- everyone loves to come visit us at the beach!

  11. Heather Avatar

Family vacations become family fieldtrips for the homeschool family and we are no exception. We learned about ocean currents before our recent trip to Florida!

    1. Jen Reyneri Avatar

      Awesome, Heather! Life is learning!

  12. Susan @Homeschooling Hearts & Minds Avatar

We don’t often vacation due to finances and logistics. 😉 Our last “vacation” was last summer. We went to Michigan as a family for 2 weeks while my husband was attending a conference related to his job. The program was at a university that is designed to accommodate the participants families, so there were a number of planned fun activities for children, as well as outings to museums and such. It was fund to get to know some new families and share a new experience.

    1. Jen Reyneri Avatar

One of the best parts of vacationing- the people we meet along the way!

  13. Karen Avatar

We have not taken a vacation specifically for homeschooling. Most of our vacations are to visit family, and while we point out learning opportunities along the way, it’s not the main focus. We dream of someday touring the USA, visiting each state, learning about the history and people!

    1. Jen Reyneri Avatar

Sounds like a great dream! Do you have a map for that? 🙂 I’m sure there’s an app for that! LOL

The last homeschool vacation we went on was to San Francisco! We went to the Academy of Sciences, the beach and other fun spots. It was great but nearly a year ago.

    1. Jen Reyneri Avatar

San Francisco is one of my favorite spots! In my crazy teenage years, I actually rented a moped and drove around those hilly streets!

  16. Katie Avatar

Our last vacation was driving cross country to visit relatives with our 2&4 year olds. We were run off the road in our rental car (totaling it, praise God we were all ok). We hung out in a tow yard for 6 hours in Waco, Tx but we made the most of it. Watching the trains go by, playing with hot wheels in the gravel and watching the moon rise. And our son was very excited to ride in the tow truck, over the train tracks on the way there:)

    1. Jen Reyneri Avatar

That sounds like a true adventure which will be passed down for ages! “Remember that time when we watched the moonrise in the gravel…”

We don’t take many vacations with 5 kiddos ages eight and under, but we’d love to go on this trip. We did get to a couple of the Chicago museums and were able to see in person some of the things we’d read about.

    1. Jen Reyneri Avatar

You do have a full house! Do you do any weekends or camping? On our last trip to Chicago, the museum happened to have an amazing Lego exhibit happening!

We just went to the Outer Banks in NC. It was wonderful. We went to historic light houses, saw wild ponies, of course the ocean, and more.

    1. Jen Reyneri Avatar

Wild ponies! Too cool! I love lighthouses! We live just a few miles from the Jupiter Lighthouse here in Florida.

  25. Sherri Avatar

Our family has never really been able to vacation the true sense of the word… due to finances. We did manage to work in a brief beach camping trip back in ’08… but we typically just take advantage of the fact that my in laws live in an awesome spot (Hampton Roads, VA) & turn our annual visits with them into our own vacation of sorts!
It works for us! But a trip like this would be the trip of a lifetime!!! Thanks for hosting such a great giveaway!

    1. Jen Reyneri Avatar

A pleasure, Sherri- I feel blessed to be hosting it! Always great to have family in a fun spot! Nearly all my vacations as a little girl were to stay with extended family! Such fond memories!

The last vacation we took was to the Creation Museum. Sadly, Daddy was not able to go with us. We also have a small farm, so family vacations are not something we get to enjoy.
We learned much at the museum, strengthening our faith and our family bond. 🙂

    1. Jen Reyneri Avatar

A farm does keep you busy. We have a big garden and lots of pets and that’s work alone! I hope to visit the Creation Museum someday too!
      Thanks for coming over!

Our family usually goes to Sandy Cove, MD for our vacations. It’s right on the Chesapeake Bay and they have a great homeschool week each July. I usually teach hands-on science classes (like volcanos, dry ice, map skills, etc.). My kids are just getting old enough to start appreciating them 😉

    1. Jen Reyneri Avatar

Our family has actually not been able to take a vacation since 2008. My husband and I are both self-employed and just haven’t been able to afford to take the family anywhere on vacation in the past 5 years. We traveled by car from our home in Wisconsin to Georgia. Our kids were pretty young at the time…our oldest was a kindergartener. Along the way we utilized the license plate game (geography) and had him color in the state when we saw the license plate; the alphabet game (finding the letters in order from a to z on signs along the roadway); stopped at many national, local and geographic landmarks and discussed the significance, both at the time of the event and to our current lives; and we journaled about the trip, utilizing some writing practice for our oldest son and narration on the rest.

    1. Jen Reyneri Avatar

Hi, Melissa- I remember long road trips and many license plate games from Wisconsin to Florida every year when I was young! Sounds like it’s time for a vacation!

Our son will be 8 in June and hasn’t ever been on a vacation. We haven’t been able to take any vacations, due to husband loosing his job a few of years ago and having to move twice. Now we only have 1 income and it is 1/2 of what it as before he lost his job. This would be fantastic to win, because we don’t know if or when we will be able to go on a vacation. Thanks for the opportunity!

Last vacation? We went to see a friend before she moved out of the country and her car broke down on the way to meet us. So we gave her a ride back to DC and spent a couple days there. She found all the free things for us to do since we can’t afford much else. The Smithsonian museum was great. We got to teach the kids about the animals of the world. We also got to talk about the president. They were too young to really remember much about it though. So years down the road now, a vacation we can turn into school would be great!

    1. Jen Reyneri Avatar

That sounds like an adventure in itself! And we, too are Smithsonian fans!

My son and I just tagged along on a trip that my husband had to take for work. We joined him in NYC. My son and I decided what we’d like to see and went to the NYC Firehouse Museum, the Intrepid Space Museum, and to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. I consider these trips and not vacations, as we try to incorporate lots of learning and don’t do much relaxing.

    1. Jen Reyneri Avatar

I can certainly relate to tagging along on daddy’s travels. We’ve loved our trips to NYC! I have learned now though to under schedule so we do get some relax time 🙂 This would be perfect! Look into it at http://www.karismahotels.com/ultimatehomeschool

My family took a vacation to Florida in December.

I used to agonize and plan and squeeze every little learning opportunity out of each trip we took. That backfired when my kids decided that traveling wasn’t “fun” anymore. Now I’m pretty much the opposite. I’m very laid back and low key. I balance our vacations with fun spots and historical, educational attractions and my kids (and myself) never fail to learn something new.

    1. Jen Reyneri Avatar

Yes, Tonya- I love being laid back and low key when traveling now. Seems to come from experience 🙂 So glad we’ve connected!

We took a trip to the Monterey peninsula of CA back in January. We were celebrating my in-law’s 50th anniversary. However, we saw Cannery Row and learned about that history. We saw the monarch butterflies in Pacific Grove and learned about habitats. We visited the Carmel Mission and learned about early CA history. Finally, we went exploring in the wild (instead of visiting the Aquarium which was having homeschool days) and saw otters, sea lions, various birds and explored in tide pools.

    1. Jen Reyneri Avatar

That is such an amazing area of our country, for sure!

Our last family vacation was last Thanksgiving ~ we rented an RV and drove up to North Carolina to visit family for the holiday. RV is a wonderful way to travel (when finances allow!) with a family of six and a dog 🙂 The beauty of the RV is that we can make stops wherever we want along the way, so we also explored Ft. McAllister Historical Park and Jekyll Island in Georgia.

    1. Jen Reyneri Avatar

Sounds like a blast, Peg! We haven’t had a big RV adventure yet- emphasis yet:)

The last “real” vacation we went on was a cruise to the Bahamas. We learned all about where we were going before hand and chose adventures such as a historic carriage ride, a trip to the gardens, and snorkeling. Other vacations or get-aways are usually tied to family visits and volunteering at a summer camp. We have a few extra days planned at Myrtle Beach this summer after a conference and we will be hitting the beach exploring tide pools and of course, swimming. In years past, we made sand candles from the children’s footprints.

We took it as a holiday and a time to get to know each other (we took my 19-year-old sister-in-law whom we had only just recently had the opportunity to meet) But the history of the caves helped prove to the kids that history can be neat.

Our last “trip” was a trip to the zoo (Lowry Park Zoo) in Tampa. We had a lot of fun. My 6 year old was very excited to see the Komodo Dragon. We had a lizard sneak into the house and he asked me if a lizard could kill somebody. I told him not the kind of lizards we have here in FL but there was one I knew of that could kill someone (the Komodo Dragon). He was so happy to see a real live one. All the kids, even my very timid youngest Daniel, enjoyed the Stingray tank. He was scared at first but warmed up to them soon after the first one glided over to him (and didn’t hurt him). It was a great time for us all. My two oldest had fun too, just in a different way. Gracie and Chris liked the Clouded Leopard. Also, it was fun to try to find the animals in their habitats, sometimes they would be hiding (or blending in so well) in such a way you couldn’t see them at first. Like I said, great time for all, not overly expensive and better than looking at pictures or videos of the animals to learn about them. 🙂

We just began homeschooling so that we could transition into worldschooling. So far we have only been on many Fieldtrips and mini vacations in our home state (we live in Texas, so it is a big state with much to see and learn). In August we are going to the Bahamas and have many things planned, but our science expedition swimming with the dolphins is the one we are looking forward to the most. We are also looking at Colorado this Summer, Guatamala for Thanksgiving (helping build a school in a small village, and next year Australia, Lord willing. Looking forward to learning more about what you guys are doing… It looks very interesting!

The last vacation we took was to the Smoky Mountains. There we decided to move and make it our new home–which we did. God has been blessing us ever since! We found a little hidden cultural pocket of bluegrass (not the touristy kind) and my son decides he wants to play the banjo. He is now a year and a half later playing with big names and has a sponsor for a great opportunity. Going somewhere can change your life. It is the contrast that helps you evaluate and grow–much like the big red streak in an otherwise grayscale painting. Contrast IS GOOD!

Let’s see . . . we went on vacation in 2010. We went to Mammoth Cave and stayed in a cabin at Jellystone Park. It was the first time we’d gone on vacation (other than a day trip) since 2003, so it was wonderful. 🙂 Really and truly wonderful.

We incorporated learning by reading Journey to the Bottomless Pit before we went, and then we went on a tour about Stephen Bishop (whom the book was about). We also played some educational-ish games like Bananagrams at the cabin (that counts as learning, right??). 🙂 Just typing this makes me want to go back. 🙂

Our last vacation was Disney but only a couple days. We incorporate learning easily at Epcot (learning about counties and US history), as well as doing scavenger hunts!

A year ago! We went to Wyoming to be with my husband because he was working there and they never let him come home. So he finagled his way into letting us come. We ended up staying on a ranch for 5 weeks and it was amazing. It wasn’t a vacation for Mr. Kerrie, but it was amazing for the kids and I.

We have never had an official family vacation. The best we can do is explore what if around us. Luckily, we have hundreds of nature-based activities from Nature Centers that offer classes, to hiking trails, to farms that offer tours. We have historical museums and centers that teach about life in the pioneer days. We have one of the best art museums in the country and it’s FREE! We are able to use these resources at least two or three times per week year-round to enhance our history, science, language arts, math and art studies.

We just took a 2 week vacation to Florida in February. Some of the educational parts included: Clearwater Marine Aquarium, Everglades tour, several state parks, Hemignway House, and a coral reef boat tour.

We fill all our vacations with educational side trips!

We went to Baltimore, we spent two weeks visiting all the historic sites and landmarks. Everything we did was a learning experience. There is nothing like learning history through experience, so much more fun than a book!!

The last time we took a family vacation was this past February on a Disney cruise. Our kids were 3 and 5, so to encourage learning we simply discussed a lot of what we saw.

We don’t homeschool but I have to say that some days I seriously think about it. There may be changes ahead in our house. My kids love to learn so every trip we take is a learning experience for them. We recently went to Orlando and since we flew they were very interested in learning how planes work.

Our “vacation” usually consists of visiting family 2000 miles away and includes lots of time exploring the woods, gardening, etc. in a very different climate than ours. This year we are driving, taking in historic sites and visiting Colonial era homes and some musuems. Can’t wait!

We don’t get to take a lot of vacations. My husband is in seminary, so we have a limited budget. This year, we are going to my parents’ house in Jacksonville, FL. They are very close to St. Augustine, so we are hoping to work in a few educational stops as well as have some beach time.

Usually, whenever my dad travels for business, we all go with him. -Thanks in no small part to a very mobile homeschool curriculum! Hence, through business trips slash family outings, and regular vacations, my family has enjoyed quite a bit of R and R over the years.
Our main destinations have been Missouri, and Washington, D.C…Now that I’ve graduated from HomeSchool, I just hope I’m on summer break from college when my family heads to Hawaii! lol
